Helping Makes Me Happy

What makes you happy? Do you know what makes me happy? Helping make someone's day just a little bit brighter. Life is such an amazing blessing. Helping a stranger just because, can give you the most unimaginable since of purpose. For many years, I sought out to find what my purpose in life was. Once I became a mother, I knew that my children were my purpose. I needed more! After all, I don't want to watch my children grow and leave the nest and I am left unfulfilled. When I am donating, volunteering, speaking, or just holding the door open for a random beautiful soul, I feel fulfilled. For some time, I thought, could there be something wrong with me? Does it make me selfish that helping others is the only way I can help myself be happy and fulfilled? Then, I realized that if we had more people in this world who cared about others, the world would be a much better place!
You don't have to have a lot to do a little. This past Thanksgiving, I was overjoyed with being able to donate 6 meals to 6 needy families. My husband and I directly shopped, packed, and delivered these meals. One lady hugged us and almost cried, another pregnant single mom of 3 was extremely touched by our kindness, and some of the others were not so personable. I came out of this day extremely happy. Not because I wanted to pat myself on the shoulder. Because I touched the lives of several strangers which I will never see again (my husband helped too..lol).
I tell you this to express to you that you don't have to be a millionaire to help someone less fortunate. You don't have to have an extremely abundant bank account to do something for someone else. I do the things I do because it brings me joy. I don't expect anything other than that in return.
I believe in living my life by treating others how I want to be treated. I know what it feels like to be lost and in need of help. Help can come in many different forms. Financial, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
I received a lovely message from a stranger one day that validated my purpose in life. He in so many words told me that I inspired him to be a better person because of the things he has seen me do.
Get out there and let's help make the world a brighter place. One smile at a time!
